A Look At Multiple NHL Power Rankings

I don’t know who started NHL Power Rankings, but everyone who is anyone seems to have their own spin on the league’s top teams from week to week. I figured, may as well have a look at the most Google friendly lists and see what hockey’s power determining leaders are saying after two weeks of play.

Canada’s TSN released the first edition of their NHL power rankings Tuesday, October 15th. At the top, the San Jose Sharks sit comfortably in first place. Something tells me the teal cladded ones will feature regularly in top spot across the board. They’re off to an incredible start.

Rather than post entire lists, I’ll give top 5’s to pique your interest. The rest is up to the list makers. To see where TSN ranks your favourite team, click this link.

TSN’s NHL Power Rankings Top 5

Interesting top 5. The Habs are 5th. Three more Original 6 teams help round out the top 10.

ESPN’s Top 5 NHL Power Rankings

Posted on October 14, 2013, by Twitter sensation Pierre LeBrun, ESPN‘s power rankings offer a different perspective on who is boss in the National Hockey League after two weeks of play.

1. St. Louis Blues

2. San Jose Sharks

3. Colorado Avalanche

4. Toronto Maple Leafs

5. Chicago Blackhawks

As you can see, the ESPN list differs from TSN’s. Both are good though. All teams mentioned are off to incredible starts. Three teams from the 2013 Stanley Cup playoffs rank bottom 10 on this list. Find out who they are by clicking here.

Sports Illustrated’s Top 5 NHL Power Rankings

Even SI (also my initials) is chiming in on who the best teams in the NHL are, in order. So far, TSN have the Sharks #1, while ESPN claim the St. Louis Blues are best. Sports Illustrated’s Allan Muir lists:

1. San Jose Sharks

2. St. Louis Blues

3. Colorado Avalanche

4. Toronto Maple Leafs

5. Chicago Blackhawks

SI’s top 5 is almost identical to that of ESPN. However, as you scroll through you will find there are eventual drastic differences beyond the first five. Sports Illustrated published their power rankings on Tuesday, October 5th. Check out the full list here.

The New York Post’s Top 5 NHL Power Rankings

I’ll be honest, I didn’t even know the NYP did an NHL power rankings, however, upon reading and reviewing, it’s as good a list as any other circulating the world wide web. Published on October 16, 2013 by David Satriano, check out the full list here.

1. San Jose Sharks

2. Colorado Avalanche

3. Toronto Maple Leafs

4. Pittsburgh Penguins

5. Chicago Blackhawks

The New York Post produce the first examined list to not feature the St. Louis Blues in the top five. Maybe they’re onto something at NYP headquarters. Or maybe not. These lists are always tough to make, especially after two weeks of game play. Good list nonetheless.

Sportsnet’s Top 5 NHL Power Rankings

Sportsnet.ca don’t eagerly praise early season surprises as much as the other power rankers. This list by Luke Fox features a lot of household names in the top spots. Published on October 10, you can view the full list here.

1. San Jose Sharks

2. Pittsburgh Penguins

3. Boston Bruins

4. Chicago Blackhawks

There are many more NHL power rankings floating around cyberspace, waiting for your scrutiny or acceptance. A simple Google search will reveal what the rest of hockey’s most list oriented prognosticators think about your favourite team’s place amongst the best, two weeks into the season.
