Last season Jaroslav Halak and Brian Elliott were an unstoppable force between the pipes for the St. Louis Blues. Both Halak and Elliott have not met expectations so far this season which has resulted in Blues’ up and comer Jake Allen starting his second game in a row. Allen is a 2008 2nd round pick of the Blues.
The Blues have not lived up to expectations this season. Last year’s Central Division champs are barely clinging to a playoff spot at the halfway point of this season. They currently sit 8th in the Western Conference, just 1 point up on 11th place Minnesota Wild.
For Jake Allen this is a great opportunity to prove himself. The Blues’ dynamic duo of Halak and Elliott both become Unrestricted Free Agents at the end of next season. For the Blues, now is the time to find out how good Allen really is before they start giving contract extensions to their other two goalies.
The Blues have been average at best this season. If Jake Allen can step in and be part of a movement to turn this season around for his team he will earn a lot of clout within the organization and make one of Halak or Elliott easier to part with.
Today is a big test for Allen. He will be facing some great shooters on the San Jose Sharks who would love nothing more than to destroy the young goalie’s confidence by scoring early and often. The Sharks are 7-1-3 at home this season.
