In a game last night between the Buffalo Sabres and Boston Bruins, NHL tough guy John Scott landed a questionable blindside hit, knocking B’s RW Loui Eriksson into a daze. There will likely be substantial supplementary discipline awarded Scott for his actions.
This is not the first time a game between the Sabres and Bruins has taken an ugly turn for the worse. In the 2011-12 season, Bruins’ Milan Lucic ran over goaltender Ryan Miller, causing a giant pile up. It’s thought Scott was acquired to regulate Boston’s physical edge over the Sabres. Watch the Lucic hit from 2011-12 here.
Scott was involved in a controversial melee earlier this (pre)season against the Toronto Maple Leafs. The Sabres tough guy initiated a fight with Leafs’ pacifist Phil Kessel. Leafs’ offseason free agent signing David Clarkson hopped the boards in defence of Kessel. His ill advised breach of league rules earned him a 10-game suspension that expired Tuesday, October 22. As Clarkson returns, Scott will likely take a turn on the sidelines. The hockey world is almost unanimous in its belief that NHL disciplinarian Brendan Shanahan will throw the book at Scott for his hit last night.
