The event signifies the third Heritage Classic in NHL history. We all remember the first one, of course, a freezing cold 2003 display of tuques, hot chocolate, and cold hockey. The Edmonton Oilers had the Montreal Canadiens over for an ice cold 4-3 Habs victory. Also known as Ty Conklin’s first outdoor game, but not his last.
The Heritage Classic 2014 is one of six outdoor games to grace the 2013-14 NHL schedule. The annual Winter Classic kicks off outdoormania on New Years Day when the Detroit Red Wings host the Toronto Maple Leafs at the Big House in Michigan.
In late January, there will be four outside hockey games spanning from January 25 to March 1. The Anaheim Ducks and Los Angeles Kings bring pond hockey to California with a Jan. 25th showdown at Dodger Stadium. The next day – January 26 – the New York Rangers vs the New Jersey Devils is one of two at Yankee Stadium in a four day window. The other, a January 29th extravaganza involving the Rangers and the New York Islanders. March 1, features a possible Stanley Cup finals preview when the Chicago Blackhawks skate on pond against the visiting Pittsburgh Penguins.
