John Muckler was the general manager of the Buffalo Sabres during Ted Nolan’s first go-round as head coach. His reign as decision maker for the club lasted from 1991 to 1997, when he was eventually replaced by Darcy Regier, who held the position of Sabres GM from then until he was fired on November 13th of this year.
Many names have circulated in media as possible replacements for Regier. One of the names at the forefront is that of Jim Benning, current assistant general manager with the Boston Bruins. Benning got a vote of confidence today from former Sabres GM Muckler:

According to CBC’s Hockey Night In Canada, and John Shannon of Sportsnet, Benning is being considered by Lafontaine for the role as new Buffalo Sabres GM.
Jim Benning has been given permission to talk to the Sabres about the vacant GM job.
